Dr Karen Sumser-Lupson is a recognized expert for maritime safety, security and humanitarian intervention bringing with her a wealth of experience and knowledge having served the sector for over 28 years. This includes a maritime security focused PhD and MSc from the University of Plymouth. Karen’s working background originated from the Search and Rescue domains and has developed to embrace defence and wider m safety, security and humanitarian fields. Karen is the Commissioner for the African Maritime Safety and Security Agency which is a strategic African led venture that will embed the benefits for the future generations of Africa as well as enable a positive promotional platform for the global community aimed at helping address the safety and security concerns of the continent. Karen is also the CEO of the new charity the International Shadow Peace Force which was formulated as a direct response to the increasingly difficult and complex environments that humanitarian organisations are obliged to work in. Karen has a particular interest in the global threats that impact on the viability of sustainable local economic development and that causes for mass displacement of communities. Karen is absolutely devoted to relieving the needs of refugees and displaced people who are affected by war, conflict, crisis or crime by working to secure the safety and security of such people by providing humanitarian support, including setting up and running refugee camps and to preserve the safety of all those engaged in humanitarian activities.
